In the demineralization process, raw water is passed through strong acid cation (SAC) resin in the hydrogen (H⁺) form, which replaces cations such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium with hydrogen ions. The water then passes through a strong base anion (SBA) resin in the hydroxide (OH⁻) form, which removes anions like chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and bicarbonate by replacing them with hydroxide ions. The hydrogen and hydroxide ions combine to form pure water—free from dissolved salts.
